Vintage art book, Émile Gallé by Philippe Garner, Sotheby's expert on applied arts from 1880s onward features 194 illustrations, including 34 in full color.
Drawing upon his professional expertise, Garner has selected the most outstanding and most representative examples of Gallé's work, many illustrations of which were specially commissioned for this book. Garner has also made several important contributions to the study of the foremost craftsmen-designers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including Eileen Gray, Jean Dunand and Pierre Legrain, which have appeared in leading art journals.
Émile Gallé (1846–1904) was a French artist known as a key figure in the Art Nouveau movement, celebrated for his innovative work in glass, ceramics, and furniture. He is most famous for his ornate glass pieces that feature naturalistic motifs like flowers and insects, often created using techniques such as cameo glass with multiple layers of overlaid and etched glass. Gallé's extensive knowledge of botany, philosophy, and natural science deeply influenced his designs, which brought him international recognition and helped establish the School of Nancy.
