This is a vintage 1970s Tiber Press NYC print based on a drawing of the famous Hellenistic marble sculpture, "The Wrestlers" or the Uffizi Wrestlers. This original silk screen print portrays two nude male athletes engaged in the ancient Greek combat sport of pankration, a form of mixed martial arts that combined boxing and wrestling and was a popular event in the ancient Olympic Games. The sculpture, currently housed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy, was discovered in Rome in 1583. This print would be well hung in a very stylish gay man's home.
Tiber Press was founded in 1953 by Floriano Vecchi, Richard Miller and Daisy Aldan to promote collaboration between poets and artists of the New York School, it was active through the 1970s. They were known for their vivid extreme colors, their prints POP. Vecchi taught Andy Warhol how to silkscreen at the Tiber Press. Floriano had Warhol redraw the dollar bill on Mylar, then showed him how to silkscreen it.
Tiber Press published books and silk-screened Christmas cards that were sold by high-end retailers like Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue. They would take antique etchings, photographs, and vintage art turning them into pop art creations.
The print is unmarked and unframed.
