This is a First American Edition, third printing hardcover copy of controversial occult classic "The Satanic Verses" by Salman Rushdie, published in 1989 by Viking. Contains newspaper clippings from 1989. The Satanic Verses has been banned in India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and several other countries. It was burned in England and Viking Press in NY received bomb threats after its release.
Satanic Verses tells the story of two men who survive a plane explosion and are transformed into the Archangel Gabriel and the devil. The novel explores themes of religion, good and evil, and the immigrant experience. Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khomeini, issued a fatwa against Rushdie, calling for his death with a 5 million dollar bounty, forcing Rushdie into hiding.
The book is a novel written in English and intended for adult readers. It has a unique and intriguing storyline that will keep you engaged from start to finish.

CONDITION
Hardcover in good used condition, pages clean, binding tight. The boards and dust jacket have some foxing and the corner of the last 5 pages has a water stain and some rippling. The dust jacket has some light shelf and edge wear.
