A work of excellent pictorial quality and notable light, embellished by an intricately carved gilded frame that enhances the painting and is in an excellent state of conservation.

Gerolamo Varese (1860-1939). Varese was an Italian painter who worked in Genoa and became a member of the Academia Ligustica in 1838. He often portrays seascapes and port views using bright colors and a great use of shades. He could be defined both as an impressionist and a symbolist.

In good antique condition with virtually no gilt loss to the frame, and only very small discreet chips on the bottom middle of the frame. It looks like there's maybe some foxing on the upper left and in the sky. I can't tell if it's on the frame glass or on the painting itself and attempted to take it out of the frame but it's nailed in there and the painting its so old the paper backing of the frame started to basically crumble as shown, I left it on because there are some markings on it. It's priced as if it's on the painting. It looks like the artist is depicting a fire in the building to left of St. Mark's so it's possible the marks are supposed to be bits of ash but I don't think so.
