Antique 1800s pectoral crucifix shows a detailed crucified Jesus with rays and an iron cross behind his head and a skull with crossbones below his feet, representing Jesus' victory over death and a reminder of our immortality. This would have been worn around the waist or neck of a member of the clergy. On the back of the cross is a sacred heart medallion wrapped in a crown of thorns. The piece is made of silver tone metal (I think it’s silver but haven’t tested it) with an ebony wood inlayed cross.
Made in Germany or Prussia but unmarked as it predates the 1880s enactment of country of origin labeling laws. The presence of the iron cross establishes its country of origin, but the timeline is too close to say if the country was formally Prussia or Germany at the time.
